Dear Rabbi Simon,
Can you please tell me if the following shavers are kosher? Philips New Series 3000 Wet or Dry Men’s Electric Shaver Philip series 6000 wet and dry men’s electric shaver Philip series 9000 wet and dry mens electric shaver Philip series 5000 wet and dry men’s electrical shaver.
Many thanks,
Monty

Dear Monty
Thank you for your question.
My experience over many years is that Philips shavers use only a scissors action rather than a razor and are therefore acceptable for use. It has been observed, however, that the same is true for nearly all contemporary electric shavers. See here: https://www.zomet.org.il/eng/?CategoryID=253&ArticleID=141
As shaver models change continuously, it is very difficult to keep up with the details of a particular device. Nevertheless, in halakhic terms, the technology does not seem to change fundamentally.
I hope this is helpful.
Best wishes.
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
