Dear Rabbi Simon,
With reference to the 3 Weeks [period of national mourning in memory of the Destruction of the Temple and the Exile] approaching [starting on Thursday 6 July 2023] – are we able to go to the theatre before the 9 Days [up to and including the Fast of Av] begin?
Thank you.
Kate

Dear Kate,
Thank you for your question.
This is somewhat of a judgment call, but on balance I cannot recommend going to the theatre, which is a recreational, leisure, cultural and entertainment experience, during these Three Weeks of the year. Best to go up to and if need be, including Wednesday night.
Best wishes

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
