BBQ Question #1

Dear Rabbi Simon
I hope you can help. We’ve been invited to a BBQ at a home – they’re not strictly kosher – but I’m sure they only use kosher meat. Can we eat the meat – ensuring no non-kosher sauces etc are added?
Many thanks,
Barbara

Hi Barb
Under the circumstances, I would say that if it is reasonable to assume that the BBQ and utensils have only been used for kosher meat, yes, you can eat and enjoy ???? ???? ????.
Best wishes,
Rabbi Rashi Simon

BBQ Question #2 (via WhatsApp, edited for clarity)

Hi Rabbi Simon,
I hope you can help with a quick question.
My father-in-law has just grilled kosher meat for us – and non-kosher meat at the same time on the same barbecue (but he put them on different sections – one grill is higher than the other). He used the same utensils to turn both meats – we were wondering what the status of the kosher meat is and if we can eat it.
Related: We have been told that one can use braai griddles and utensils if you burn them for 15-20 minutes. We would like to do this to the barbecue too. It’s currently at 400C. At what level of char would residue cease to be a concern? While I’m asking, is this relevant for chometz too, ie if there’s chometz residue and you want to use your BBQ over Pesach?
Many thanks,
Brian

Hi Braai
I hope you are able to find other food to eat, as the arrangements you describe as they are at present do not “meet” kosher requirements ????. ???? ???? ????
However, yes, you can kasher the BBQ as you indicate, if there is no residue from the non-kosher meat, and the 400C is maintained for 15 minutes. But I question if this can be accomplished for the utensils, as they cannot endure such sustained heat. Note that generally, we prefer to clean first, but forליבון גמור  the intense heat reduces the residue to ash in any case.
The same principle applies for Pesach. Ash is permissible even on Pesach.
Best wishes,
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
