Travelling over Pesach

Dear Rabbi Simon, Can you please remind me and those travelling over Pesach, does one have to clean the home etc if one’s travelling before Yom Tov and not returning until after the Chag? Also, what happens to bedikat chametz? Many thanks, Daniel Dear Daniel, One who will be away for all of Pesach should adopt either of two approaches: a. Arrange…

Cup size, Kitniot

Dear Rabbi Simon, I hope you don’t mind me contacting you, but I have a couple of Pesach related questions that I would be grateful if you could answer for me please. The first is regarding the 4 cups for the seder-I just wanted to know what was the minimum requirement for these? I’m assuming the normal ‘l’chaim’ cups that…

Allergy-free Pesach

Dear Rabbi Simon As Pinny (age 5) is allergic to peanuts, I can look forward to Pesach with confidence, knowing that all kosher Ashkenazi homes will be kitniyot free and therefore peanut free – but to my surprise it seems very unclear and I show a few sources below to this effect: South African Beth Din: Are peanuts considered Kitniyot?…

Questions and Answers

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
