Dear Rabbi Simon,
My stepfather is spending Shabbos in the hospital. Is it halakhically possible for me to recite kiddush for him at his bedside in the evening, without accepting Shabbos myself? I would like to drive home afterwards and accept Shabbos later (local sunset today is after 9:00pm).

First, I wish your stepfather a full recovery. Hospital is not the best place to spend Shabbos!
Turning to your question, years ago the rabbi at Bikur Cholim hospital in Jerusalem had the same dilemma. Based on the responsum of the great Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, I would say that yes, you may make kiddush for your stepfather in the hospital after 7:30pm today while only accepting Shabbos later, once you are home.

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
