Dear Rabbi Simon
Can I wash clothes needed for yom tov on chol hamoed?
Thank you for your question. The simple answer is “no, you may not,” although there are limited circumstances in which this may be allowed. These include:
- No other clean clothes available. (Although even if this is the case, it is preferable to buy than to launder, if this is an option.)
- Clothes of young children difficult to keep clean (or stockpile in sufficient quantity).
- Clothing (also towels or linens) badly soiled which is a hazard or unpleasant to keep as is
- A stain which may not be removable if left for several days.
There is more to be said on this topic for a thorough treatment, but I hope this is helpful.
Rabbi Rashi Simon
