Dear Rabbi Simon,
What rules apply to sewing/alterations during the Three Weeks?
Many thanks,
Sue

Dear Sue,
Thank you for your question.
Sewing, ie weaving or fashioning a new garment should be avoided during the period known as the Three Weeks (ie the 22 days from the Fast of 17 Tamuz until 9 Av, inclusive). If you refer only to repairing or altering a garment which has been previously worn, this is allowed. However, if the garment is new, the alterations should wait until after 9 Av, as this is tantamount to weaving/completing a new garment.
Best wishes

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
