Shaving in the 3 Weeks

Dear Rabbi Simon,
I have a question for you.  Are there any leniencies around shaving during the 3 Weeks/9 Days, such as on Erev Shabbos or for important business meetings?
Thank you,
Dave

Dear Dave,
Thank you for your question. There are grounds to permit shaving on Friday for the honour of Shabbos. This was our practice in Yeshiva (based on the opinion of Rabbi Akiva Eiger). Also for a consequential business meeting/presentation or similar, if you feel that your appearance may have a bearing on the outcome. This applies even during the “Nine Days” (of Av). (Erev 9 Av and the Fast day itself are excluded from this leniency).
With best wishes for the Consolation of Yerushalayim

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
