New Tallit

< Back

Dear Rabbi Simon,
Quick question. I bought a new Tallis for Shabbat use. Should I recite the shehechiyanu blessing (on acquiring or wearing a new garment) on Shabbos when I use for first time?
Many thanks,
Baruch

Hi Baruch
Thank you for your question. Since the blessing of שהחיינו is on the new garment rather than the mitzvah per se, שהחיינו should be recited first. (This is partly because, strictly speaking, one can/should recite the shehechiyanu blessing when buying the garment, even days before wearing it. However, common practice is to wait to say the berachah until wearing/using the garment.)Then recite the berachah להתעטף בציצית, then enwrap yourself in the טלית (as usual). Enjoy your new tallis in honour of Shabbos (and the mitzvah itself).
Best wishes,
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
