Chanukah in Camp

< Back

Dear Rabbi Simon,
Just a question from camp.
We have 110 people here and we are all being covered (at least the campers) by one menorah lighting. (So we’re doing mehadrin, but not mehadrin min ha-mehadrin.)
Should one person (such as me) recite the blessings on behalf of everyone, or should each camper recite she-asah niasim and she-hehiyanu (1st night) for him/herself?
Many thanks,
Meir

Dear Meir,
Good question. Strictly speaking, ברב עם הדרת מלך, and one can say for all. However, I would suggest that there is a חינוך benefit to all the campers saying the two ברכות together with the one who lights.
Best wishes for a luminous Chanukah

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
