Latest Chanukah Lighting

Dear Rabbi Simon,
What’s the latest time one can light his or her Chanukiah?
Many thanks,
Meir

Dear Meir,
Nowadays that people are out and about until quite late, depending on the street where you live, in extremis one may light until at least 10:00pm, or even midnight or later (eg on Finchley Road). Indeed, in accordance with the minhag that we light indoors, one can even fulfil the mitzvah of “publicising the miracle” through the participation of another member of the household (ie, as long as s/he has not yet gone to bed). Nevertheless, it is best to light promptly at nightfall or as soon as achievable thereafter.
I hope this is helpful.
Best wishes for a luminous Chanukah

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
