Tenant Moving in on Shabbat

Dear Rabbi Simon
I hope that you are well. Sorry to trouble you but I wondered if there is any issue with allowing a tenant moving into a rental property on a Shabbos? The contracts have been signed and payments were made two months in advance but the tenant can only move in on a Saturday. The keys would be left with porters…
Kind regards,
Laura

Dear Laura,
If the tenant is not Jewish, no problem. If s/he is Jewish, a bit more problematic. We will have to discuss it…
Regards,
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Dear Rabbi Simon,
The tenant is Andrew Brown from the USA, via an estate agency. I have no idea if he is Jewish, and it would be a bit awkward to ask!
Laura

Hi Laura
Maybe his real name is Bernstein, but who are you to know? ?? So it’s fine.
Best wishes
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
