Wearing Clothes of Deceased

Dear Rabbi Simon
My father passed away and I have been tasked with disposal or allocation of his belongings. I know we are not supposed to use the shoes of the deceased. But what about the clothes?
Can we use them?
Separately (but a related question), is it appropriate to have a shabbat guest during the week of shiva?
Thanks,
Claire

Dear Claire
In general, there is no impediment to using the clothing of the deceased.
WRT shoes, the basis of this Jewish practice, albeit not actually forbidden in halakhah, is the writings of Rabbi Judah the Pious of Regensburg (1150-1217). I would endorse the view that the restriction applies specifically to the shoes (if any) he was wearing at the time of his passing. Any other shoes belonging to him may be use without compunction.
Regarding Shabbos guest during the days of the shiva, there is no prohibition per se, but you may feel that a guest will be a distraction. This is a judgement call according to the specifics of the situation.
With blessings of consolation and strength
Best wishes
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
