Tasty Cereal?

You are here:

Dear Rabbi Simon,
What do we do if for instance, you’re eating a bowl of cereal and a small bug lands in your bowl? Does one need to calculate the volume of the insect against that of the contents of the bowl, re 1:60 threshold?
Thanks
Cyril

Hi Cyril
Thank you for your practical (if slightly unappetizing) question.
The answer is, just remove the insect and enjoy the rest of the cereal. (On Shabbos, remove some cereal and/or milk with the insect to avoid the prohibition of borer [sorting, ie removing detritus from a mixture]).
In the case of cold cereal, no taste is imparted by the bug, so there is no need to calculate 1:60. In the interest of thoroughness: If the cereal is hot, eg, porridge, further investigation/clarification may be necessary. If this happens, get in touch to discuss.
Best wishes
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
