Kosher Glass Dishes

Dear Rabbi Simon,
My grandmother has moved out of her home and has glass/crystal glasses and decanters that we can take or give to a charity shop. Kashrus was not observed in her home.
Can you please advise if we can use them?
Thanks,
Crystal

Dear Crystal,
You may use these glass and crystal items without cavil. As a matter of extra certainty, you can apply the process known as  מלוי ועירוי (literally, filling and emptying). Fill a bathtub with water and submerge the items for 24 hours. Empty the water and repeat the exercise twice. Then you’re done. Lechaim.
Best wishes
Rabbi Rashi Simon

Ask the Rabbi: Quinoa on Pesach
Dear Rabbi Simon,
Where do you stand on quinoa (and the kitniyot ban) for Pesach?
Many thanks,
Tzippy

Dear Tzippy,
In line with other American authorities, I am in favour of quinoa. Although I reject completely the voices (mostly from Israel) seeking to abolish the ban on kitniyot entirely, IMO we do not need to include in the prohibition pseudo-grains that were unknown in the Old World until modern times. Best to buy with a Pesach hechsher though, to be free of any possible wheat contamination.
